STEAM & Computer Science Innovative Program

Program Overview

Sheridan Hills Elementary School offers unique computer science learning opportunities for students in the Computer Science special class and afterschool clubs!  Students learn typing/keyboarding as early as first grade.  Our second through fifth grade students learn basic coding skills such as sequencing, loops, events, variables, and functions using block-based coding.  We use coding curriculum from Code.org, Microsoft MakeCode, and codeSpark. We also learn how to bring our code into the real world using physical devices such as the micro:bit. We bring coding into creative gaming using Minecraft Education's agent. Students learn age-appropriate digital citizenship/internet safety skills and internet research skills.  They learn how to use basic office programs such as a word processor, slideshow presentations, and spreadsheets. Students learn how to troubleshoot simple computer problems, while learning more about computer hardware and Microsoft Windows' operating system.

We bring in digital engineering skills using Tinkercad's 3D design program which allows students to create their own unique 3D designs and print them out to take home.  Digital engineering and teamwork skills shine when students use Minecraft Education to build amazing structures within a group. Students combine their coding and engineering skills to build a track for robots and then drive robots through their own unique obstacle course.

Afterschool computer science opportunities include Girls Coding & STEAM club and Minecraft E-Sports club.
